A new Camp Shalom

The Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver’s JCC Camp Shalom for children and youth living in the Metro Vancouver area is coming to Burquest Jewish Community Centre Aug. 21 to Sept. 1.

Four years ago, a collaboration between JCC Camp Shalom and the Aleph in the Tri-Cities group began with the support of the Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver. This made it possible for children living in regional communities to attend JCC Camp Shalom in Vancouver.

This year, thanks to a grant from the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Vancouver, JCC Camp Shalom will venture into the Tri-Cities and run its first outreach session of the summer camp at the Burquest Jewish Community Centre.

This camp will look and feel just like JCC Camp Shalom: Jewish exploration and an Israel connection, while celebrating Canada 150; fieldtrips in nature and an overnight camping trip are included as well. The outreach camp also has free bus transportation and rates matching other camps in the area. Israeli and Jewish families living in Burnaby, New Westminster, the Tri-Cities (Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody) and beyond will be able to register their children ages 5-13 for one or two weeks of full-day camp. Registration opens May 5.

Shalom on our doorstep within our hometown!” said Yossi Dagan of the Aleph in the Tri-Cities group, who has been part of the project since its inception.

“As a community member living in the Tri-Cities, I am so excited to be able to send my children to a Jewish day camp so close to home,” said Tammy King, mother of three and program coordinator for Burquest. “For the first time, they will be able to participate in Jewish programming, learn about Israel and meet other Jewish kids their own age. This is definitely an exciting opportunity for Jewish families living outside of Vancouver.”

Hebrew in Tri-Cities

Three years ago, a group of parents, all members of the Facebook group Aleph in the Tri-Cities, decided to create their own Hebrew Sunday school. It took more than a year of preparations before everything fell in place, but last September, the Tri-Cities Hebrew School began serving 14 elementary schoolchildren from Burnaby, Richmond and Coquitlam. They recently completed their first year.

The educational program was designed by Limor Friedman, a former IBA (Israel Broadcasting Authority) foreign correspondent. “We wanted to provide language and culture to our children, not only prepare them for a bar mitzvah. Our program was designed for children to learn about Israel through songs, books, reading and writing. The children were introduced to Israeli poets and authors that expanded the experience beyond the regular aleph-bet. We celebrated the Jewish holidays with emphasis on Israeli tradition, not just the Jewish perspective. One of my favorite classes was for the children to learn the map of Israel and to recognize which city or town their parents came from – it was a great way to discover their own roots and learn about their own personal background.”

The three-hour weekly class was led by Noa Marnin Gilad, who was a teacher in Israel, with the help of 19-year-old Ram Alexaiev; story time was led by Dovrat Vitis. Yossi “Joe” Dagan was the administrator, whose vision helped establish this new venture.

“Our Facebook group went through major changes over the last year,” explained Dagan over the phone. “We are now officially a registered not-for-profit organization with a mission statement to provide Jewish experience to the growing Jewish population of the Vancouver suburbs. It’s a challenge to build a budget based on donations but we love what we do and our community members love what we do, so it keeps us motivated for the future.”

Friedman’s proudest moment of the school year came over the Passover dinner table. “Seeing my daughter singing all of the Passover songs brought tears to my eyes. Our guests were amazed, too. That is the greatest benefit of group learning. Some parents think it’s better to teach Hebrew in the privacy of their own home, but then the child feels alone and he is insecure about the whole experience. In a group, children feel that they are not alone, that this is not something that only their own parents care about. The power of the group turns it into a positive lesson and it becomes important for them to do well, not just for us, but for themselves as well, and that is priceless.”

Aleph is in full swing

Aleph in the Tri-Cities Society / Israeli Canadian Culture Club donated more than 150 boxes of organic foodstuffs to the Jewish Food Bank last week. The shipment included pasta, raisins, nuts and tea.

Aleph was started in 2009 by Yossi (Joe) Dagan. Wanting to be part of a Jewish/Israeli community, Dagan said that driving to events at the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver or the Kollel was not easy to do on a regular basis, so he started a Facebook page and sought out compatriots in Coquitlam, where he lives. When he heard people speaking Russian or Hebrew, he would introduce himself.

“We are 306 on the FB page and we have a hard core of about 50-70 families that meet up for gatherings, holiday celebrations, Hebrew learning circle, field trips, bike rides, nature walks, parent meetings, culture shows and sports events,” said Dagan. “Our mission is to connect newcomers, young families and Jews within the Tri-Cities area and beyond.”

In 2013, with the help of Miri Tal, Aleph collaborated with the Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver and Jewish Family Service Agency until February 2015, when Aleph started their own nonprofit society. In the Facebook post on the recent food bank donation, which can be found by searching “Israeli Canadian Culture Club,” Dagan thanked Dovrat Vitis and Gabrielle Dumont, and noted that the two shipments were worth more than $20,000 in retail value.

“As our group grows and needs expand,” said Dagan, “we are looking for donations going forward to help our group to keep on creating free or very low cost activities for our children. For example, we need immediate support to run our awesome outreach collaboration with the JCC summer camp, Camp Shalom. We are looking to support transportation costs that are needed to rent and operate a bus taking our children from Burnaby, Coquitlam, Port Moody, Port Coquitlam and Langley to the JCC and back every day for seven weeks of summer vacation 2015.” The program is supported by the JCC, JFSA and Federation, but the bus fees are not covered.
