ברור מהנתונים שאנחנו רואים, בעיקר מאלה המגיעים ממשטרת קנדה, שיש עלייה אדירה באנטישמית במונחים של פשעי שנאה, אומרת ליונס. וזה בלי להזכיר את התקריות האיומות אבל חוקיות נגד יהודים שאנחנו שומעים עליהן לעיתים קרובות. לדעתה של ליונס רמת האנטישמיות בקנדה נמצאת עכשיו בשיא של כל הזמנים וזה חסר תקדים

ארגון בני ברית קנדה פרסם לאחרונה את הדוח השנתי שלו על תקריות אנטישמיות במדינה. לפי הדוח הארגון חלה עלייה דרמטית מאז טבח השבעה באוקטובר. על פי המקרים שדווחו לבני ברית גם באמצעות עבודה עם המשטרה, אשתקד נרשמו קרוב לששת אלפים מעשי אלימות, הטרדה וונדליזם כלפי יהודים. זאת יותר מפי שניים מאשר שנה קודם לכן

בין פשעי השנאה המוזכרים נמנים הצתת מעדנייה בטורונטו, ירי לעבר בית ספר יהודי במונטריאול, ונדליזם בחנות ספרים בטורונטו של רשת אינדיגו שמייסדה הוא יהודי, פגיעה בבתי כנסת ובשכונות ועסקים יהודיים שונים. וכן השחתה של בתים פרטיים בסמלים ובביטויים אנטישמיים

לאחרונה סיסמאות משלהבות במאהלי מחאה שהוקמו באוניברסיטאות ובייחוד בעצרות אנטי־ישראליות בוונקובר ובאוטווה הוסיפו שמן למדורה. ליונס רוצה שחברי הקהילה היהודית ידעו שהיא רואה ושומעת את החששות שלהם לנוכח ההסלמה ברטוריקה האנטישמית ובוונדליזם. ליונס מוסיפה שהיא רואה את הכאב שלהם כשבהפגנות מובילי המחאה קוראים יחי השבעה באוקטובר והקהל מריע

זה עלול להיות התרחיש הטוב יותר אם לא יהיה שינוי בתגובת המנהיגים. ליונס מאמינה שאנחנו באמת נתונים במשבר. והיא חוששת שלא מספיק אנשים מבינים את זה, או שאם הם מבינים זאת, הם לא יודעים מה הם יכולים לעשות לגבי זה

מפעל בונדס ישראל בקנדה מגייס כספים למען ישראל כאשר כלכלה ניזוקה קשות לאור המלחמה הארוכה בעזה

הבונדס שהוא בעצם מפעל מלווה העצמאות והפיתוח עוסק במכירת איגרות חוב של מדינת ישראל ליהודים ברחבי העולם, ובעיקר בארצות הברית וקנדה. מפעל הבונדס הוקם בשנת אלפים תשע מאות וחמישים ביוזמת ראש ממשלת ישראל דאז, דוד בן גוריון. לפרוייקט היו שותפים גם שר האוצר דאז אליעזר קפלן, גולדה מאיר ושמואל רוטנברג

עד כה גייס מפעל הבונדס כחמישים מיליארד דולר (אמריקני) והכספים מיועדים בעיקר לתקציבי הפיתוח של ממשלת ישראל. בין הפרויקטים שהוקמו בישראל בכספי הבונד: המוביל הארצי, מיפעלי ים המלח, תחנת הכוח אורות רבין בחדרה, פיתוח נמלי הים בחיפה, אשדוד ואילת, עזרה בעלייה הגדולה מברית המועצות, הרחבת נמל התעופה בן גוריון, שיפור תשתיות כולל של רכבת ישראל

קיים ויכוח מתמיד בין התומכים במפעל הבונד ובין השוללים אותו. התומכים אומרים כי בונדס ישראל נחוץ לקיים את הקשר והזיקה בין היהודים בעולם רוכשי אגרות החוב לבין מדינת ישראל. ואילו השוללים טוענים כי הריבית של בונדס ישראל גבוהה מאוד והיא מהווה נטל בלתי מוצדק על תקציב מדינת ישראל

I want to thank Daphna not just for inviting me today. But for inviting each of us here every Sunday. It’s so important.

Daphna – todah rabah.

I was not born into this community. Nor did I convert. I just showed up here, about 30 years ago, like a stray dog. And you took me in.

As someone coming into this community from the outside — but especially, coming from a background of progressive, left-wing activism, from the gay community, from antiracist activism, I have had the opportunity to see, to hear and to understand events from different angles.

When I showed up in Vancouver’s Jewish community, I had no idea about the depths of the familial, spiritual, emotional and personal connections between almost every Jewish person and the state and the land of Israel.

And I think this is one of the things that you probably discovered in the last five months. Most people just do not comprehend what Israel means to Jewish people.

We need to share that story. But we can only share that story if other people will listen. And that is the problem.

Because the people who need to hear it are too busy chanting to listen … or to understand.

Many British Columbians fail to understand why a former cabinet minister is claiming anti-Jewish bias while so many of her colleagues, who have apparently invested no effort into exploring the many forms antisemitism can take, steadfastly insist there must be some other explanation.

Israel is the national embodiment of the Jewish people. To attack Israel is to attack Jews.

Here is the bigger issue …

The people who are marching against Israel … they are not helping the people of Gaza … and they sure as hell are not making the world a better place.

The only thing they are doing is making Canada a more dangerous, toxic, intolerant country.

Hateful words against Israel are inciting violence against Jews in Canada.

And when we express concern about this undeniable correlation, we are accused of conflating anti-Zionism with antisemitism … as if that distinction makes a damn bit of difference to the victim of a hate crime.

Words of hate … lead to acts of hate. We understand this when it comes to any other group.

But when it comes to Jews … people are willing to employ the most dangerous, inflammatory and incendiary rhetoric. And let the chips fall where they may.

But it is not only Jews and Israelis who are under attack by these radical extremists.

It is the very essence of what it means to be Canadian. It is our core national values that these activists betray.

Day after day, we see shrieking, crazed mobs shutting down events, screaming obscenities and threatening people who are trying to live their lives, commute to work, go to the theatre, attend synagogue or get an education.

The person you should be hearing from is not me.

Selina Robinson was invited here today. But it was not safe for her to come.

What does that tell you about the state of civil discourse in Canada?

You’ve seen their rallies. You have heard their chants. Do those look to you like people of peace?

They call for Israel to stop defending itself … but they refuse to demand the one thing that would immediately end the war and all this dying – the surrender of Hamas.

On the steps of this art gallery, days after the pogrom of October 7, people stood here and celebrated murder, rape, beheadings and kidnappings.

We mourn … we grieve every single innocent life lost.

We do not celebrate dead innocents.

Neither do we tally up bodies in a grotesque competition where the side with the most dead wins moral victory.

And even if some of the people who march for Palestine do not celebrate beheadings, do not applaud rape or rejoice at mass murder – they are absolutely content to march alongside people who do.

Those who on these steps called those horrific, inhuman atrocities “brilliant and amazing” are not only part of a movement that is holding human beings hostage.

They are holding hostage humanity itself.

They have abducted words like peace and ceasefire, freedom and human rights — but they desecrate these values.

Canadians have allowed people who align with the most misogynistic, homophobic, xenophobic, violent and totalitarian forces on earth to masquerade as voices for justice and equality … while accusing us of humanity’s greatest crimes.

If these people were genuinely advancing human rights and social justice, they wouldn’t need to cover their faces in keffiyahs and balaclavas.

We need to figuratively tear off their masks and show Canadians who these people are …

Maybe many Canadians don’t care about a conflict half a world away.

But the violence, coercion, intimidation and racism these people embody is a threat to Canada… to our civility … our peace, our multiculturalism and political discourse.

But the threat does not come only from the goons marching in the streets.

It also comes from some of our elected officials – including some who, until very recently, we thought were our friends — from the trusted teacher, the activist clergyperson, the crusading union leader, the self-righteous politically engaged artist.

Meanwhile, far too many Canadians have stood on the sidelines while extremists have taken over our streets, our campuses, our community theatres, our high schools, our public service.

Maybe they don’t care about Israelis.

Maybe they don’t care if the Jewish people lose their country.

But when they wake up and see that Canadians have lost ours … Jewish Canadians and their allies will be asking. Where were you?

Where were you when we were standing up for the values that Israelis and Canadians share?

Where were you when we demanded bring them home?

Because if you are not standing with Israelis against extremism … you are emboldening extremism in Canada.

This is not about choosing between Israelis and Palestinians. Unlike the extremists, we want peace for everyone.

This is about choosing between civilization and barbarism.

And we need to ask every Canadian: Which side are you on?

Using politics to divide

The House of Commons passed a watered-down motion about Israel and Palestine Monday night after a raucous day in Parliament. The compromise amendments on the New Democratic Party’s motion seemed as much about saving face for the governing Liberals as they did about doing what is right for Palestinians and Israelis.

The main takeaway from the compromise was the change from calling on the government to unilaterally recognize the “state of Palestine” to working toward “the establishment of the state of Palestine as part of a negotiated two-state solution,” which is essentially what Canadian foreign policy has said for years.

The rest of the motion was a laundry list of demands, some reasonable, some far out. There were mandatory expressions of concern for victims on both sides and platitudes about future coexistence.

The clear sticking point was the unilateral recognition of Palestine as a state. The opposition Conservatives were unanimously opposed to the motion. The Bloc Québécois (which might hope other countries would someday recognize an independent Quebec), the Greens and, of course, the sponsoring NDP lined up in favour. The drama Monday was in the Liberal caucus.

Opposition parties have tried to use the conflict and the larger issues in the Middle East as a wedge between various factions in the governing Liberal caucus. While many Liberal MPs probably wish the unending bugbear of Mideast politics would stop filling their inboxes, small numbers of MPs on both sides of the issue are deeply committed to their respective positions. After the motion was amended, the most vocal pro-Israel Liberals – Anthony Housefather, Marco Mendocino and Ben Carr – voted against their caucus colleagues, leaving the decided impression that the Zionists were frozen out in a negotiation that most Liberals felt they could support without alienating too many of their voters.

While everyone wishes the violence would end, the motion’s call for an immediate ceasefire is, speciously, a backdoor for continued Hamas rule. The call to end Canadian military trade with Israel is a largely hollow symbol – there is hardly any trade in military equipment and, of that, it is exclusively non-lethal material.

What many people found offensive in the motion was the idea that, in the aftermath of the Oct. 7 terror attacks, we should move in what is, in historical terms, the blink of an eye, to demanding Palestinian statehood. Most reasonable people imagine a two-state solution – but to prioritize that now sends a message, not only to Palestinian extremists, but to violent forces everywhere, that mass murder and kidnappings are the surest ways to advance your cause.

The NDP position is based on an assumption that Israel appears to have given up on the two-state solution – indeed, the prime minister of Israel has effectively said just that. And, yes, there are extremist voices within Israel’s government who are committed to denying Palestinian statehood. However, the continued terrorism and incitement to eradicate Israel that remains widespread, if not ubiquitous, in Palestinian politics and society is a major cause of the failure of a two-state solution. Israel may have an effective veto on Palestinian statehood, but it is Palestinian terrorists (and the failure of the, ahem, elected leaders to reign them in) that has put the two-state solution on a back burner. It is a challenge to understand how Oct. 7 reasonably moves that goal forward. To suggest that Canada should recognize a Palestinian state before the Palestinians have believably committed to living in coexistence is to demonstrate a profound nonchalance about the lives of Israelis.

But, let’s be clear about a couple of things. No reasonable person is expecting a permanent peace between Israel and an eventual state of Palestine that looks like, say, the amity between Canada and the United States. We can hope for a cold peace like those between Israel and Egypt or Jordan. Anything beyond that is still in the realm of fantasy, though there are people on the ground, on both sides, who are working towards a warmer, more integrated and, frankly, safer reality.

Moreover, for all the nail-biting on Parliament Hill this week, in the greater scheme, the whole drama amounted to a hill of hummus. Let’s not overestimate the impact Canada can have. Whatever Canadian MPs say or do about the conflict, the Dead Sea remains salty. This does not mean, however, that Monday’s spectacle has no impacts. It has impacts – on Canadian Jews, Israelis, Palestinians, Muslims and others with a deep connection to these issues.

Heather McPherson, the NDP foreign affairs critics, acknowledged on CBC TV Monday that the motion was really about making a statement in support of Palestinians (as were, presumably, the numerous keffiyehs and fists of solidarity raised during the votes). Fine. As other MPs noted, though, the motion – whether passed or defeated – was destined to leave one community hurt.

The final motion was better than the original one. Not by much, though. In the end, a compromise was attempted, but the voices of the Jewish and pro-Israel communities were the ones who still felt betrayed.

Pro-Israel organizations in Canada released condemnatory statements, with the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs scathingly declaring that the Liberal government has “chosen to effectively sub-contract Canadian foreign policy to anti-Israel radicals within the NDP and the Bloc Québécois.”

For all the fireworks and emotion, the entire fiasco was an example of multicultural communities being pitted against one another through wedge politics on a divisive issue that guaranteed one community in the country would feel abandoned. And, after political manoeuvring, backroom negotiations and 11th-hour compromises … surprise! It’s the Jews.

מסלולי ההגירה בקנדה מחולקים על פי הפרובינציות השונות. על פי השיטה על המבקש להגר לכאן מוטל להציג מספיק נקודות שנקבעות לפי מספר קריטריונים. ובהם: מקצוע, גיל ורמת האנגלית. מי מבקשים להגר לקנדה שהציג מספיק נקודות, יכול להגיש בקשה לתושבות קבע, לאחר מספר שנים לעבור מבחן (באזרחות) ואז להפוך לאזרח קבוע. כידוע אזרחים יכולים לבקש דרכון קנדי, נחשב לאחד הדרכונים המבוקשים ביותר בעולם במשך שנים

את הגשת המועמדות להגירה ניתן להגיש באופן עצמאי או להשתמש ביועצי הגירה המומחים לנושא, שיעזרו במילוי הטפסים הרבים. את הטפסים לבקשות הגירה ניתן להגיש מישראל, או מקנדה למי שנמצא כאן על פי ויזת עבודה או אלה שלומדים כאן

זמן ההמתנה לקבלת האישורים להגירה יכול להימשך כשנה ואף יותר מכך, בהתאם לרמת הנקודות של המבקש

באופן כללי מסלולי הגירה לקנדה נחלקים בגדול למסלולים זמנים ומסלולים לתושבות קבע. וזאת על פי קריטריונים שונים ובהם: הגירה לצעירים ומשכילים, הגירה על פי תוכניות של הפרובינציות השונות, מקצועות מבוקשים, הגירה לצורכי לימודים. וכן מסלולים למשקיעים פיננסים, קרובים מדרגה ראשונה ועוד

ניתן לקבל אשרות שהייה זמניות לצרכי לימודים גבוהים או עבודה. אם מעסיק קנדי מציע למועמד הצעת עבודה שעומדת בתנאים של משרד העבודה הקנדי, אפשר לקבל אשרת עבודה למשך מספר שנים. בדרך כלל אשרת עבודה מתקבלת מהר וניתן להאריכה בסך הכל עד שבע שנים. כמובן אם המשרה של העובד עדיין בתוקף. לאלה שעובדים בקנדה, העבודה תקנה להם נקודות כך שבתוך שנתיים הם יוכלו להגיש מועמדות של תושבות קבע במסלול המהיר. מי שקיבל שהתקבל ללימודים במוסד להשכלה גבוהה בקנדה (אוניברסיטהי או קולג’) למשך חצי שנה או יותר, יוכל לקבל ויזת לימודים. בתום סיום הלימודים המועמד יהיה זכאי לקבל ויזת עבודה בקנדה, למשך של שלוש שנים. זאת תלוי במסלול הלימודים ובאישור שהתקבל על ידי מוסד הלימודים. יש לזכור שעל מוסד הלימודים להיות מאושר על ידי מערכת ההגירה של קנדה. הלימודים או העבודה לאחריהם יכולים להקנות מספקי נקודות כדי להגיש מועמדות לקבלת תושבות קבע, במסלול המהיר

קנדה היא מדינה בחלקה הצפונית של צפון אמריקה, היא המדינה השנייה בעולם בגודל בשטח ואוכלוסייתה מונה קרוב לארבעים מיליון איש. קנדה מחולקת לעשר פרובינציות ושלוש וטריטוריות. המדינה היא מונרכיה חוקתית ודמוקרטיה פרלמנטרית. לקנדה גבול בודד עם ארצות הברית ומדובר על הגבול היבשתי הארוך בעולם, באורך של קרוב לתשעת אלפי קילומטרים. עיר הבירה של קנדה היא אוטווה בה נמצא הפרלמנט ומקום מושבה של הממשלה הפדרלית וכן של המושל הכללי, שמייצג את ראש המדינה – המלך של אנגליה. קנדה היא מושבה בריטית לשעבר והיא המדינה הגדולה ביותר בחבר העמים הבריטי. ברוב המדינה יש מזג אוויר קר בחורף, ובכלל מזג אוויר קר מאפיין את המדינה, אולם באזור דרום המדינה חם בקיץ. קנדה מאוכלסת בדלילות, רוב השטח הכפרי מיוער ובמדינה ישנם גם את הרי הרוקי. רוב תושבי המדינה גרים בערים גדולות ובינוניות, למעשה מדובר במדינה עירונית מאוד כאשר כשמונים ושניים אחוזים מהתושבים מתגוררים בערים. שליש מהאוכלוסייה חי בשלוש הערים הגדולות: טורונטו, מונטריאול, וונקובר. קרוב לשלושים מיליון תיירים מבקרים בקנדה מדי שנה. סיבות ההגעה שלהם למדינה מגוונות. ספורט החורף במדינה מפותח מאוד ומביא תיירות רבה למדינה, בקנדה יש גם הרבה פסטיבלים בחורף ובקיץ המושכים אליהם תיירים רבים מכל רחבי העולם

בחלק השני מתפרסם מידע על היהודים בקנדה

בקנדה גרים כארבע מאות ועשרים אלף יהודים שמהווים קצת יותר מאחוז מתושבי המדינה. מוצאם של רוב יהודי קנדה הוא אשכנזי אולם במדינה חיים גם יהודים ממוצא ספרדי, מזרחי ומגוירים. בקנדה ישנם מוסדות תרבות יהודיים רבים המשרתים את הקהילות הרבות במדינה על זרמיהם השונים. למרות היותם מיעוט קטן במדינה, נוכחות יהודי קנדה במדינה מתקיימת כבר מאז סיום מלחמת שבע השנים. רוב אוכלוסיית היהודים במדינה מתגוררת בערים הגדולות. בטורונטו ובמונטריאול חיות הקהילות היהודיות הגדולות במדינה, כאשר בטורונטו חיים כמאתיים וחמישים אלף יהודים ובמונטריאול למעלה ממאה אלף יהודים. אלו גם הערים בהן ניתן למצוא מסעדות כשרות וחנויות לממכר אוכל כשר. קהילות יהודיות חיות גם בערים אחרות אך אוכלוסייתן קטנה יותר, וגם הסיכוי למצוא בהם אוכל כשר קטן ונעשה קשה יותר לאיתור, אולם עדיין גם מחוץ לערים אלו ישנן מסעדות וחנויות כשרות גם מחוץ לטורונטו ומונטריאול

בחלק השלישי מתפרסם מידע על ונקובר

The choice to convert

A religion that encourages questions, one in which people can speak directly with God. A religion that’s thousands of years old, which so many have attempted to wipe out, yet still flourishes. A religion that’s intellectual and communal, which involves both the head and the heart.

These are just some of the aspects of Judaism highlighted in Converts: The Journey of Becoming Jewish, directed by Rebecca Shore and Oren Rosenfeld. The 70-minute documentary is part of this year’s Vancouver Jewish Film Festival, which runs April 4-14 in theatres and April 15-19 online.

Converts follows Adam, Danya and Bianka as they go through the conversion process. Each have their own reasons for wanting to become Jewish.

Adam, a student at York University when we meet him, grew up in a violence-filled neighbourhood in Toronto. His father used the family’s savings – that could have gone into moving the family elsewhere – to establish a church, which failed. Adam was attracted to Judaism because, unlike the Christianity he grew up with, Judaism gave him the space to ask questions and to speak with God directly, though giving up belief in Jesus was hard, he admits.

Danya, a businesswoman from Costa Rica, found out in high school that she has Spanish-Portuguese Jewish roots, that her ancestors were forced to convert to Catholicism from Judaism centuries ago. She feels that ancestral pull and uproots her life, traveling to Israel with her daughter in the hope of converting and living there.

Bianka, a PhD student in chemistry at the University of Warsaw, lives in Radom, Poland. She immerses herself in a few other religions before finding comfort in what she considers Judaism’s scientific approach, but also in the warmth of the Jewish community, which she discovers by attending synagogue and holiday events.

Well-constructed and well-paced, Converts is a fascinating look at identity, family, community, religion, the search for meaning and the possibilities of change and self-actualization.

מערכת הבריאות הקנדית נחשבת לאחת מהטובות בעולם ומדורגת באופן קבוע בעשירון העליון בדירוגים שונים, כולל של ארגון הבריאות הנילאומי. בניגוד לשכנתה ארצות הברית ובדומה לרוב מדינות אירופה, בקנדה קיימת מערכת בריאות אוניברסלית הנגישה לכולם, ובנוייה על תשלום מס בריאות. כמו בישראל, ניתן להוסיף לכף ביטוח רפואי פרטי, שבכוחו להגדיל את הכיסוי, לקצר זמני המתנה לרופאים מומחים ועוד. ישנם מקומות עבודה המספקים ביטוח רפואי פרטי כהטבה לעובדיהם. כל הפרטים הללו רלוונטיים לאזרחים קנדיים. אם עדיין לא קיבלתם אזרחות של המדינה – מומלץ להצטייד בביטוח רפואי פרטי

טרודו: יש להבטיח את שלומם של היהודים בקנדה לאור העלייה באנטישמיות

ראש ממשלת קנדה, ג’סטין טרודו, נועד עם מפקד משטרת טורונטו על רקע העליה החדה במספר האירועים האנטישמיים בקנדה. טרודו ציין כי הוא דן עם מפקד משטרה להבטיח את שלומם של היהודים בעיר ולפעול בכל דרך נדרשת כדי להתמודד עם השנאה על כל ביטוייה

בנוסף, נפגש טרודו עם מנהיגים בקהילה היהודית בטורונטו המודאגים מהעליה בהיקף האנטישמיות בעקבות מתקפת חמאס והג’יהאד האיסלאמי נגד ישראל בשבעה באוקטובר. ובעקבותיה המלחמה הקשה שישראל מנהלת בעזה שהביא למותם של עשרות אלפי אזרחים בהם נשים וילדים רבים. טרודו אמר לראשי קהילה היהודית כי הוא מודה להם על שהביעו בכנות את הכאב, הזעם והיגון שלהם. “אני מקשיב לכם. אני רוצה שתדעו שיש לנו מחויבות בלתי מעורערת לכם ולישראל כמדינה יהודית ודמוקרטית”

טרודו הוסיף: “אני רוצה שתדעו, כי אני נמשיך להיות ממוקדים במאבק באנטישמיות ולהבטיח שאתם וכל היהודים בקנדה יהיו בטוחים מפני אלימות אנטישמית. זו פעולה שכולנו, ובפרט קנדים שאינם יהודים, חייבים לעשות ביחד”

מאז אוקטובר נרשמה עליה חדה באנטישמיות בקנדה, ובכלל זה דווח על שני אירועי ירי ושני אירועי השלכת בקבוקי תבערה לעבר מוסדות יהודיים במונטריאול, חבלה וניסיון להצית סופרמרקט בבעלות יהודית בטורונטו, ונדליזם בחנות ספרים בבעלות יהודית בטורונטו, ניפוץ שמשות של מכונית שעליה דגל ישראל מצפון לטורונטו, התנכלות והשמעת ביטויים אנטישמיים כלפי יהודים שיצאו מבית כנסת מצפון לטורונטו

טרודו, ציין כי הוא אינו מביע תמיכה בתביעה שהגישה דרום אפריקה בבית הדין הבינלאומי נגד ישראל בטענה שהיא מבצעת רצח עם ברצועת עזה. בשיחה עם עיתונאים אמר טרודו, כי תמיכתה של קנדה בבית הדין הבינלאומי ובהליכים שהוא מנהל אין משמעותה שקנדה תומכת בהנחה שבתביעה שהוגשה על ידי דרום אפריקה

ואילו שרת החוץ של קנדה, מלאני ג’ולי, ציינה כי קנדה ממשיכה לגנות בחריפות ובאופן חד משמעי את מתקפת הטרור של חמאס על ישראל. לדבריה, חמאס היא ישות טרור מוכרזת שממשיכה לקרוא במפורש לחיסול יהודים ולהשמדת מדינת ישראל. לישראל הזכות להתקיים ולהגן על עצמה מפני התקפות טרור בהתאם לחוק הבינלאומי. בהגנה על עצמה, ועל ישראל לכבד את המשפט ההומניטרי הבינלאומי. ג’ולי: “קנדה נותרה מודאגת עמוקות מהיקף המשבר ההומניטרי בעזה ומהסיכונים המתמשכים לכל האזרחים הפלסטינים. יש להגביר ולשמור על גישה הומניטרית בטוחה וללא הפרעה. קנדה תומכת במאמצים בינלאומיים דחופים לקראת הפסקת אש בת קיימא. זה לא יכול להיות חד צדדי. על חמאס לשחרר את כל בני הערובה, להפסיק להשתמש באזרחים פלסטינים כמגנים אנושיים ולהניח את נשקו”

גם שרת החוץ ציינה כי התמיכה הבלתי מעורערת של קנדה במשפט הבינלאומי ובבית הדין הבינלאומי אין משמעותה שהיא מקבלת את הנחת היסוד של התביעה שהגישה דרום אפריקה. “אנו נעקוב מקרוב אחר ההליכים בתיק של דרום אפריקה בבית הדין הבינלאומי לצדק”, אמרה עוד ג’ולי

על פי אמנת רצח העם של האו”ם משנת אלף תשע מאות ארבעים ושמונה, הפשע של רצח עם דורש כוונה להרוס או להרוס חלקית קבוצה בגלל הלאום, האתניות, הגזע או הדת שלה. עמידה ברף הגבוה הזה דורשת ראיות משכנעות

שרת החוץ הקנדית הזהירה מפני סכנת האנטישמיות. “עלינו להבטיח שהצעדים הפרוצדורליים במקרה זה לא ישמשו לטפח אנטישמיות והטרדה של שכונות יהודיות, עסקים ואנשים פרטיים. במקביל, נמשיך לעמוד נגד האיסלאמופוביה והרגשות האנטי-ערביים. קנדה נותרה מחויבת בתוקף להילחם בדעות קדומות, שנאה וקיצוניות אלימה”

Poll addresses bigotry

For Jews around the world, 2023 was among the most traumatizing years in recent memory. The advent of a new secular year, the turning of the calendar page to 2024, presents a figurative new beginning, some optimism and hope for a potentially better time. These emotions do not come easily right now, which is why the results of a recently released opinion poll seem right for the times, reflecting a little darkness and a little light.

An Angus Reid poll asked Canadians their opinions on the prevalence of antisemitism and anti-Muslim hatred and prejudice in Canada.

Addressing both types of prejudice – toward Jews and Muslims – 11% of respondents say there is “not really a problem at all in Canada.” However, about one in 10 respondents viewed antisemitism as a “minor problem” (11%), while 14% said the same about anti-Muslim hatred. More than half of respondents described antisemitism (52%) and anti-Muslim hatred (53%) as “a problem, but one among many others.” And just over one-quarter of respondents, 26%, said antisemitism is “a major problem requiring serious attention,” while 22% said the same about anti-Muslim hatred.

The overall impression left by the poll is that, among Canadians, there is genuine concern and recognition of these bigotries as an issue. Where more worrying numbers arise is when results are teased out based on Jewish and Muslim survey respondents. In both instances, perhaps unsurprisingly, members of the affected groups express the belief that the problems are of much greater severity than the general population seems to think. On the issue of anti-Muslim hatred and prejudice, 48% of Muslim respondents say it is a major problem, while 38% of overall respondents say it’s a problem, but one among many. The first number – with almost half of Muslims saying it is a major problem – is double that of overall respondents.

Meanwhile, 75% of Jewish respondents said antisemitism is a major problem – almost triple the number of overall respondents who thought so. While a vast majority of respondents see antisemitism as a problem, to varying degrees, Jewish respondents are far more likely to view the severity of antisemitism as greater. Conversely, Muslim respondents were almost three times as likely as overall respondents (32% versus 11%) to say antisemitism is “not really a problem at all in Canada.” Fully 49% of Muslim survey respondents said antisemitism is a minor problem or not really a problem, indicating a schism in appreciation of the problem between these communities. Jewish respondents were slightly more acknowledging than overall respondents toward anti-Muslim bias, with 26% calling it a serious problem (compared with 22% overall), 55% as a problem but one among many (versus 53%) and only 4% saying it is not really a problem at all (versus 11%).

Polling is an imperfect science and recent electoral surprises have indicated its shortcomings in dramatic ways. Nevertheless, a poll of this sort probably captures fairly effectively the zeitgeist of Canadian opinion.

One indication seems to be that members of groups affected by prejudice and discrimination view them as much more serious problems than people who are not directly affected. It is human nature to be more concerned about things that affect us directly. However, when there are significant divergences of opinion around the seriousness of a social problem between people who are directly affected and those who are not, it is, at a minimum, a sign of a communication issue and potentially signals a threat to multicultural cohesion.

One might wonder whether those who experience antisemitism and anti-Muslim bigotry are not doing an effective job of explaining their experiences to the larger community, or whether the larger community is not listening – or, perhaps, a combination of both circumstances is at play.

It is often said that the first step in confronting a problem is the simple acknowledgment of its existence. What is absolutely encouraging is the apparently overwhelming recognition that these are problems that need addressing. There has been, in human nature and across history, a tendency among many people who are not affected by racism to be oblivious to it or to actively deny that it exists. We are fortunate that, if this poll is to be believed, we do not need to convince our neighbours that bias and discrimination are issues.

As we look ahead to the rest of 2024, as Jews and Canadians, let’s dedicate ourselves to tangible solutions to these problems and to really listening to other communities when they tell us they are facing prejudice and discrimination. These are two of the challenges we need to rise to meet.
