Sigd, a holiday of Beta Israel – “the House of Israel,” the Jewish community rooted in Ethiopia – is observed 50 days after Yom Kippur. Jewish Federation of British Columbia will hold a Sigd celebration in Vancouver on Nov. 8, at 4 p.m., that includes a cultural exhibit, children’s programming, music and dancing. It will be emceed by Oriyan Yona and honour two individuals: Yona Bogale, who led the Beta Israel education network in Ethiopia and championed the immigration of Ethiopian Jews to Israel, and Dr. Will Recant, whose advocacy and leadership played an important role in supporting Ethiopian Jews during and after Operation Solomon.
