See Bonnie Stern cook

Learn from a maven at the Jewish Book Festival.
CYNTHIA RAMSAY

Bonnie Stern, one of Canada's most well-known food personalities, will be at Barbara Jo's Books to Cooks and at the Cherie Smith JCCGV Jewish Book Festival this coming week, with her new book, Friday Night Dinners.

Stern is the author of 12 bestselling cookbooks, including the HeartSmart series, in partnership with the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and she has hosted two national television shows. For more than 30 years, she has operated the Bonnie Stern School of Cooking and she currently writes a weekly column for the National Post.

"Friday night dinner means different things to different people," writes Stern in the introduction to her new cookbook, "but to anyone who is Jewish, it means a special family dinner to celebrate the end of the work week and to welcome Shabbat, the day of rest. It is a wonderful tradition that everyone can enjoy." And, indeed, she goes on to say that it's not just family who are involved in and welcome at Shabbat dinner – her friends, her husband's friends, their kids' friends, friends of friends have all been on the guest list at some point.

It is no surprise then that the menus in Friday Night Dinners allow for many tastes. Containing more than 170 recipes, Stern writes, "The menus in this book cover the gamut of quick meals, meals from different countries, vegetarian meals, seasonal, holiday comfort and everything that I (and I hope you, too) like to cook for those I love. And, in respect for the Jewish tradition of Friday night dinners, the recipes and menus in this book are kosher friendly." The easy-to-read font and layout, accompanied by several color photos make this valuable addition to any Jewish bookshelf.

For more information about Friday Night Dinners or Stern's other publications, visit the website www.bonniestern.com.

Stern will be signing her Friday Night Dinners cookbook at Barbara Jo's Books to Cooks in the Net Loft building on Granville Island Nov. 22, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. For more information about this event, call 604-684-6788 or e-mail [email protected].

On Monday, Nov. 24, 6:30 p.m., Stern will be at the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver to discuss good nutrition and healthy eating – and to encourage the audience to re-evaluate their own eating habits. Co-presented with the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C./Yukon, this presentation will focus on Stern's HeartSmart cookbooks. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door.

Also as part of the JCCGV Jewish Book Festival, Stern will be giving a cooking demonstration and luncheon, along with a book sale and signing, on Tuesday, Nov. 25, 11:30 a.m. Tickets are $36 in advance and $40 at the door for the lunch.

Tickets to the book festival events can be purchased from the JCCGV at jccgv.com, 604-257-5111 or in person at the centre.
