De-clutter, make cash

SHIRLEY WALSH

Consignment has come a long way since Jackie O quietly sold her used clothing in Manhattan in the 1970s.

Today, consignment is viewed as a great way for everyone to decrease landfill, allow working, professional women to access upscale outfits for a lot less than retail, and give a second life to special-occasion clothing, not to mention getting cash for items you wish to move out of your wardrobe.

It is always a good idea to check with a consignment store regarding their fashion focus, policies and, importantly, the size range that the shop carries.

Near-new garments that are in impeccable shape are the real moneymakers. These clothes should be seasonal, fresh and look like new. A good consignment store will offer only carefully selected garments, so, if you plan to consign, you need to choose items that you can be proud to pass on.

These days, a consignment shopper is likely a woman who is savvy, stylish and busy with work and social engagements. This shopper will be truly discerning; someone who appreciates value as well as style.

For shoppers, it’s all about an extensive selection with a variation of styles and labels. The biggest bonus is getting so much for so little.

For the consignor, “in demand” items include:
• The gorgeous outfit that you wore to your child’s wedding, bar mitzvah or other special event
• cocktail dresses and other evening wear
• modern business wear
• upscale casual
• swimwear

Quality footwear in new condition also does very well. This spring, shimmering pumps, citrus color shoes and sexy, dressy sandals are hot. Also, very comfortable summer sandals will be in high demand.

Gorgeous handbags in sorbet colors are really popular this year and smart evening clutches are all the rage, as well. Upscale brands sell quickly.

Remember, that well-made jewelry items can make money for you also and tend to go quickly. This spring, turquoise, silver and pearls are good sellers.

Most consignment stores take items on for a three-month term and generally offer 40 percent of the selling price back to the consignor. It’s a fun way to de-clutter for spring, make some money and then go out and reward yourself with more great clothes!

Enjoy de-cluttering and happy spring!
