Rennie gold in playoffs

The final round of the VJHL is under way at the RIC.
KYLE BERGER REPORTER

Golden Bear Kevin Rennie was almost a complete enigma for most of the Vancouver Jewish Hockey League (VJHL) season. With a paltry four goals and seven assists, good for only fifth place on team scoring, it looked like the days of the shifty centre's elite status were well behind him. It certainly didn't seem as though Rennie, known for his strength on the puck and behind-the-back passes to himself, would still be able to compete as one of the league's best forwards.
That was, of course, until the playoffs began.

Rennie has been an unstoppable force in this post-season while he and Jack Serlin led their underdog team past the Teal Lightning and to a two-game sweep over the Black Panthers, earning him the nickname the "Golden One."

In the playoffs, where defences usually focus more attention on opposing teams' top skaters, Rennie has already matched his regular season goal total, while adding an assist for five points in three games.

Steve Garfield, a captain of the Black Panthers, said that it was the Golden One's heroics that helped the Bears take the series lead in game one.

"Kevin Rennie was the best player on the ice and at times dominated," he said. "In the first period he split our defence and scored a nice goal, setting the tempo for Gold. They never looked back."

While Rennie's efforts weren't enough to top the White Rhinos in the first game of the VJHL finals (White won 4-2 on March 23), he was involved in both of Gold's goals and will no doubt be a handful for the White defence throughout the rest of the series.

Game two will take place March 30 at 7 p.m. in the Coliseum rink of the Richmond Ice Centre. Game three, if necessary, is scheduled for the same time, same place, April 6.
