Move to Israel for good

Letters

Editor: I read the article "Gallery sells Israeli art," published Jan. 3 in the Jewish Bulletin. I am really happy to see two young people have found a creative way to make a living in Vancouver and at the same time trying to help Israeli artists.

One thing disturbs me about the article. Mr. Kurbatoff said that one and a half years ago, he and his wife decided to move from Israel (coming some years before from the Ukraine) to Vancouver, "to live in the country to which Konstantin had always dreamed of coming." I believe in the 21st century Jews have the right to live wherever they want in the world. But, as an Israeli going back to my homeland this coming August, I don't understand why people who dream about living in Vancouver cannot come here directly from the Ukraine instead of spending some years in Israel at the expense of the Israeli government. I am sure that Mr. Kurbatoff is aware of the poor economic situation in Israel today and that Israel has more important things to spend money on than supporting new immigrants who plan on leaving the country in a short time.
