The award, sponsored by the Society of American Travel Writers Foundation, is given \u201cfor outstanding print, online and multimedia works and for travel photography and both audio and video broadcast.\u201d Faculty members of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill School of Journalism and Mass Communication judge the competition.<\/p>\n<p>Siegel was recognized for her article \u201c<a href=\"jewishindependent.ca\/oldsite\/%20archives\/nov13\/archives13nov22-13.html\" target=\"_blank\">World Opens Up Solo<\/a>,\u201d published by the <em>Jewish Independent<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The gold for Personal Comment went to Tony Perrottet, \u201cRich Tourist, Poor Tourist,\u201d published by the <em>New York Times<\/em>; the bronze to Sean Carlson, \u201cThe Reach of a Single Village,\u201d in the <em>Irish Times<\/em>; and an honorable mention to Christopher Solomon, \u201cA Case for Getting Far, Far Away,\u201d the <em>New York Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Masada Siegel, a journalist and media personality known as \u201cThe Fun Girl Correspondent,\u201d has won silver in the Personal Comment category of the 2014 Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Competition.
