In honour of Jewish Book Month, which runs Nov. 13 to Dec. 13, I\u2019m highlighting a short article that appeared in the Independent<\/i>\u2019s predecessor, the Jewish Western Bulletin<\/i>, on Dec. 18, 1970.<\/p>\n

\"image<\/a>The focus on the Jewish Community Centre Library, now called the Isaac Waldman Jewish Public Library, stressed the \u201cvital role\u201d the library plays \u201cin the life of the Vancouver Jewish community\u201d and how it serves \u201cthe community at large in a very meaningful and important way. At any time, one can pass by and see it being used for recreational reading, browsing or study.\u201d<\/p>\n

The article notes how a visiting professor who stopped in at the library remarked \u201chow thoroughly cross-referenced it was.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMrs. Marvin Weintraub, hardworking and dedicated volunteer librarian,\u201d aka Rita Weintraub, is interviewed for the story. Many in our community will have known Rita, who died in 2020. The library she was instrumental in building was a lifelong passion. In the article, she refers to the library as important for \u201cthe spiritual well-bring of the community.\u201d As such, she said, it should be \u201cthe concern of all organizations as well as of all public-spirited individuals who are in a position to provide an endowment which will link their name in perpetuity with the highest Judaic ideas of learning and Torah.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
