Making old, familiar stories new and fresh again. Writer Sandy Lanton and illustrator Kim Barnes do just this with their take on Red Riding Hood: Lily Blue Riding Hood<\/em>, published by Seattle\u2019s Intergalactic Afikoman<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Lily loves to skateboard and almost every page of Lily Blue Riding Hood<\/em> is full of movement, as she swiftly rolls to everywhere she needs to be. On Purim, it\u2019s to Granny\u2019s house, with her blue hoodie pulled over her Queen Esther costume, its crown atop her helmet, her backpack full of hamantashen she\u2019s just baked (leaving behind the messiest of kitchens). On the way, she passes Thaddeus T. Wolfe and chats long enough with him that the smell of the hamantashen gets him plotting how he can get Granny\u2019s treats for himself.<\/p>\n

Readers can make their own treats using the recipe for Lily\u2019s Skateboarding Hamantashen, which are the regular triangle shape, but then attached to a long flat cookie, the \u201cskateboard,\u201d and either small round cookie or candy \u201cwheels.\u201d The recipe page also includes a paragraph on what Purim is and how it\u2019s celebrated.<\/p>\n
