(photos from RJDS)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Last month, amid the heavy rains, Richmond Jewish Day School had to close for two days because its parking lot was flooded. Despite working with city crews and independent contractors to pump out the water, the area still looked like a small lake on the third day \u2013 but the school could reopen because of the kindness of its neighbours along No. 5 Road.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jewishindependent.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/dec-10-BC-floods.10.RJDS-inset-THUI2533.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-37987\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jewishindependent.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/dec-10-BC-floods.10.RJDS-inset-THUI2533.jpg\" alt=\"photo - Flooded RJDS parking lot \" width=\"300\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jewishindependent.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/dec-10-BC-floods.10.RJDS-inset-THUI2533.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.jewishindependent.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/dec-10-BC-floods.10.RJDS-inset-THUI2533-169x300.jpg 169w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>RJDS staff and visitors were granted permission to\u00a0park at the Gurdwara Nanak Niwas temple on the north side of the school building, RJDS principal Sabrina Bhojani told the <em>Independent<\/em>. On the south side, she said, Subramaniya Swamy Temple allowed the school to use their parking as a pickup and drop-off point, and the gate that joins the two properties was used to access the school building, which was undamaged by the flooding.<\/p>\n<p>Neighbours along the \u201cHighway to Heaven\u201d \u2013 called that because of the number and diversity of faith organizations in that stretch of No. 5 Road \u2013 come\u00a0together both at times of adversity and celebration, Bhojani said, and RJDS hosted Celebration of Light on the Highway to Heaven on Dec. 5. The outdoor event was a \u201ccommunal expression of solidarity in calling out and combating antisemitism and racism,\u201d she said in an email before the event took place.<\/p>\n<p>Invitees included, among others, members of the Christian community, celebrating Christmas; the African community, celebrating Kwanzaa; the Hindi community, who celebrated Diwali in early November; and the Chinese community, who will celebrate Teng Chieh in February.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><em>\u2013 Courtesy Richmond Jewish Day School<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Neighbours provided Richmond Jewish Day School with parking and more when the school\u2019s parking lot and front entrance area flooded.
