(photo from <a href=\"http:\/\/cigionline.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cigionline.org<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On Nov. 9, the Simces &amp; Rabkin Family Dialogue on Human Rights,\u00a0in partnership with the\u00a0Canadian Museum for Human Rights, hosts the online program Is Facebook a Threat to Democracy? A Conversation About Rights in the Digital Age.<\/p>\n<p>Platforms like Facebook, which collect and share huge amounts of information, are being accused of putting profit above democracy and the public good. Can government regulation protect us and our children from online harm and misinformation \u2013 or is \u201cBig Tech\u201d ungovernable? How can Canadians balance freedom of expression and protection from harm\u00a0on social media?<\/p>\n<p>These questions and many others will be discussed by Taylor Owen in conversation with Jessica Johnson.<\/p>\n<p>Owen\u00a0is the Beaverbrook Chair in Media, Ethics and Communications, the founding director of the Centre for Media, Technology and Democracy, and an associate professor in the Max Bell School of Public Policy at McGill University. He is the host of the Centre for International Governance Innovation\u2019s <em>Big Tech<\/em> podcast, and is\u00a0also a senior fellow of CIGI. His work focuses on the intersection of media, technology and public policy.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson\u00a0is editor-in-chief at\u00a0<em>The Walrus<\/em> magazine. A former editor at the <em>Globe &amp; Mail<\/em> and\u00a0<em>National Post<\/em>\u00a0newspapers, she is an award-winning\u00a0journalist who has contributed essays, features and criticism to a wide range of North American publications. She was the co-creator, with\u00a0<em>Maclean<\/em>\u2019s\u00a0journalist Anne Kingston, of\u00a0#MeToo and the Media, an inaugural course in the University of Toronto\u2019s Book and Media Studies program.<\/p>\n<p>The Simces &amp; Rabkin Family Dialogue on Human Rights will be on Zoom on Nov. 9 from\u00a0noon to 1:30 p.m. PST. It will include an audience Q&amp;A session opportunity.
