Given by the American Jewish Press Association \u2013 whose membership consists of newspapers, magazines, websites, other electronic Jewish media organizations, individual journalists and affiliated organizations throughout the United States and Canada \u2013 the <em>Jewish Independent<\/em> garnered three prizes and an honourable mention for its work in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>JI<\/em> competes in the 14,999-circulation-and-under division and swept that division in the Personal Essay category, winning first and second place. \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jewishindependent.ca\/reflecting-on-my-jewish-hero\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reflecting on my Jewish hero<\/a>\u201d by Becca Wertman about her grandfather (April 12, 2019) won first prize, while \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jewishindependent.ca\/folk-choir-celebrates-40th\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Folk choir celebrates 40th<\/a>\u201d by Victor Neuman about the Vancouver Jewish Folk Choir\u2019s 40th anniversary (May 10) placed second.<\/p>\n<p>Neuman\u2019s eight-part series on his life in Israel around the time of the 1973 Yom Kippur (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jewishindependent.ca\/learning-the-lay-of-the-land\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sept. 20<\/a> through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jewishindependent.ca\/on-return-to-canada-life-changes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nov. 15<\/a>) won first place in the 14,999-circulation-and-under division. And, in that division, Shelley Civkin\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jewishindependent.ca\/?s=Accidental+Balabusta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Accidental Balabusta<\/a> series received an honourable mention in the Excellence in Writing About Food and Wine category.<\/p>\n<p>In the larger paper division, <em>Canadian Jewish News<\/em>, which closed its doors this year, won three first-place awards for its work in 2019. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cjnews.com\/perspectives\/newman-a-funeral-for-a-survivor-no-one-knew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A funeral for a survivor no one knew<\/a>\u201d by Zale Newman (Feb. 14) won the Award for Excellence in Personal Essay; \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cjnews.com\/living-jewish\/navigating-organ-donation-in-judaism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Navigating organ donation in Judaism<\/a>\u201d by Lila Sarick (June 6) won the Chaim Sheba Medical Centre Award for Excellence in Writing about Health Care; and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cjnews.com\/food\/rise-of-the-vegan-jew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rise of the vegan Jew<\/a>\u201d by Michael Fraiman (Oct. 3) won the Award for Excellence in Writing about Food and Wine.<\/p>\n<p>To find out about all the other winners, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/ajpa.org\/2020-competition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ajpa.org\/2020-competition<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 39th annual Simon Rockower Awards for Excellence in Jewish Journalism were presented virtually on July 2.
