{"id":33207,"date":"2019-09-06T03:39:49","date_gmt":"2019-09-06T10:39:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jewishindependent.ca\/?p=33207"},"modified":"2019-09-04T11:53:43","modified_gmt":"2019-09-04T18:53:43","slug":"new-vso-season-starts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jewishindependent.ca\/index.php\/2019\/09\/06\/new-vso-season-starts\/","title":{"rendered":"New VSO season starts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Israeli mandolinist Avi Avital joins Vancouver Symphony Orchestra for a concert in the spring. <em>(photo from <a href=\"http:\/\/vancouversymphony.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vancouversymphony.ca<\/a>)<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra\u2019s 101st season opens Sept. 20-21 at the Orpheum Theatre with Canadian diva Adrianne Pieczonka singing Franz Schubert\u2019s orchestrated lieder, including Der Erlk\u00f6nig (The Elf King), paired with Gustav Mahler\u2019s Symphony No. 1 (Titan) and the world premi\u00e8re of a new work commissioned from Juno-nominated Bekah Simms.<\/p>\n<p>The VSO\u2019s upcoming season also features several performers from the Jewish community, including cellist Gary Hoffman, originally from Vancouver, who provides a definitive interpretation of Edward Elgar\u2019s Cello Concerto. Part of the 2019-2020 Masterworks Gold series, the Nov. 29-30 concert includes Modest Mussorgsky\u2019s Night on Bald Mountain and Jean Sibelius\u2019s Symphony No. 5.<\/p>\n<p>Also as part of this season\u2019s Masterworks Gold series, Gidon Kremer joins the VSO Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 in a performance of Robert Schumann\u2019s Cello Concerto, in a transcription for violin. Anton Bruckner\u2019s fourth and most popular Romantic symphony is part of the program, as is Orpheus by Canadian composer\/conductor Samy Moussa.<\/p>\n<p>This season\u2019s Musically Speaking series includes Israeli mandolinist Avi Avital in a May 9 concert of works inspired by Italy, playing Ludwig von Beethoven\u2019s Symphony No. 8, perhaps Beethoven\u2019s most experimental symphony. Likewise, Giovanni Sollima\u2019s new Mandolin Concerto, written for Avital, mashes up musical styles from baroque to rock \u2019n\u2019 roll. Antonio Vivaldi\u2019s Mandolin Concerto and Igor Stravinsky\u2019s Pulcinella Suite round out the program, which will also be performed in North Vancouver on May 7 and in Surrey on May 8.<\/p>\n<p>On May 22-23, Barenaked Ladies co-founder Steven Page brings an arsenal of songs from his 30-year catalogue for a sweeping set backed by the VSO. Together with trio mates Craig Northey and Kevin Fox, Page will guide audiences through an evening featuring songs from his solo career as well as Barenaked Ladies classics.
