{"id":33020,"date":"2019-07-19T03:36:27","date_gmt":"2019-07-19T10:36:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jewishindependent.ca\/?p=33020"},"modified":"2019-07-18T23:53:59","modified_gmt":"2019-07-19T06:53:59","slug":"solving-a-mystery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jewishindependent.ca\/index.php\/2019\/07\/19\/solving-a-mystery\/","title":{"rendered":"Solving a mystery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em>(photo from University of Haifa via Ashernet)<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This pre-Columbian cultural artifact at the University of Haifa is one of the mysterious art objects from Puerto Rico that were alleged to have been made by members of the Ten Lost Tribes. \u201cThis is definitely one of the strangest and most fascinating stories I\u2019ve ever been involved in,\u201d stated the university\u2019s Dr. Iris Groman-Yaroslavsky. \u201cTo date, we have not found any similar carved stone art objects from this region of the Americas and, therefore, many researchers assumed that they must be fake. However, the microscopic tests we performed show beyond any doubt that the stones were carved around 600 years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The story of these art objects, known as the \u201cLibrary of Ag\u00fceyban\u00e1,\u201d goes back to the 19th century, when a Puerto Rican monk by the name of Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Nazario presented a collection of some 800 carved stone statuettes, some of which had a clearly human form while others appeared to be artistic or ritual items. No similar statuettes or art objects have ever been found from this region, and it was he who claimed the Lost Tribes connection. In 2001, a research student named Reniel Rodr\u00edguez Ramos saw the stones during a study trip and was enchanted. He completed his doctorate in pre-Columbian cultures and returned to investigate the stones.
