Sing along with Fiddler

DANA SCHLANGER SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH BULLETIN

The Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver (JCC) is getting ready for what promises to be one of the best events of the season. The first ever sing-along Fiddler on the Roof in Vancouver will be held in the Norman Rothstein Theatre next week. Hosted by special guest stars, award-winning actors Babz Chula and Jay Brazeau, it will give everyone the opportunity to be part of Tevye's world for a few hours, dress up for the occasion, sing those wonderful songs and meddle loudly in his life.

Fiddler on the Roof – the moving and humorous tale of Tevye the milkman's struggle to marry off his daughters – is one of the best musicals ever written, with a compelling story line, beautiful music, wonderful cinematography and stunning choreography. The movie includes classic songs such as "Tradition," "Matchmaker, Matchmaker," "To Life," "Miracle of Miracles," "Sunrise, Sunset" and "If I Were a Rich Man."

Without tradition, life would be as shaky as a fiddler on the roof, as would be the JCC without the community's support. The focus of this event is to bring the community together to celebrate tradition, have some fun and raise funds for the many programs enjoyed at the centre, including financial assistance for children to attend camp, day care and sports programs, physical rehabilitative programs and assistance to seniors, as well as scholarships for performing arts courses.

The Fiddler on the Roof sing-along will take place at the JCC on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 7:30 p.m., followed by a food reception. Tickets are $25. A family-oriented matinée will follow on Sunday, Oct. 20, at 2 p.m. Tickets are $18 for adults, $13 for children under 13 and $54 for a family of four.

Dana Schlanger is the director of the Dena Wosk School of Performing Arts at the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver.
